I am trying to get my buildup specs finally on my 351w. I have decided to go with gt-40p heads, a comp cams extreme energy cam with a pretty decent lift over stock. I have heard and seen from desktop dyno that a 600 - 650 cfm crb is about the biggest I would need for this motor. I was thinking a 600 or 650 cfm edlebrock 4 barrel. Is this a good choice? Should I go bigger? Also, what is the advantage of a double pumper carb over reg one? Do I need it? Thanks.
I don't think you will go wrong either way. Your right all you really need is a 600-650 cfm carb.
Here is a common train of thought. IF you want a good street carb, go with the edelbrock. If your wanting all out performance, go with the holley. I like them both, but prefer the edelbrock, just because it is so easy to tune. Just my opinion, good luck, so which comp camshaft are you gonna go with?
I agree with jwtaylor....go with the edelbrock. Air / fuel mixture is easy, plus the metering rods are right on top of the carb...rather than having to remove fuel bowls to change jets.
Also you will not need a double-pumper unless you like the gas station. You might need a higher stall converter if you got an automatic, depending on your cam, if its over .500 gross lift you must check piston to valve clearence and may need different springs, otherwise you may end up having to rebuild the whole engine.
It will if you step your cam up to one with more duration and lift, you will also need to match your intake manifold and stall converter to your cam, otherwise you will not get the performance you are expecting.
With the cam you mentioned, I personally would say you should run a edelbrock performer rpm intake, tci saturday night special converter, edelbrock or holley 600-650 vaccum secondary carb, headers and dual exhaust. Dont forget to take your rear end gears into account.
Have you taken a look at the post I have in the performance section? Its under "ratsmoker i have a question for you."
A few graphs to look at with different cams on a stock 351w and also figured with gt-40p heads. He ran one or two 4X4 cams. Something to look at.
As to whether the holley would make more hp? I don't know about that but it might use more fuel if you don't get it set just right. Good luck
I have a chance to get an edelbrock performer intake and a 600cfm 4 barrel with auto choke, vaccum secondaries. Is this a good combo? Each are for 100 bucks.
