Look on the tag on the rear end, look at the axle code on the door sticker, jack up one side, put the trans in neutral and see if you can turn the tire. One of those ways ought to work.
Jack up one side, turn the wheel, then what?
When it comes to mechanics I am a user.
Thanks
Roland

Jack up the whole rear end. Leave the truck in park and make sure the parking brake is not on. Spin one wheel and observe what happens to the other. If it spins the opposite direction you have an open differential. If there is a lot of bind on the wheel you are turning and it seems like it does not want to move look at the other wheel while doing this. It should want to go in the same direction. If this is so, you have limited slip. If you spin the wheel and nothing happens, then you have problems. Just kidding. Spin the wheel as fast as you can. If someone has installed a locker, you should be able to hear it engage or trying to engage while spinning the wheel as fast as you can. You might want to try the last one while the truck is in neutral though.
There`s a thread in the forums somewhere that tells what rear your truck has by the code on the label on the door. I was wanting to find a L/S conversion for my `98 B-3000 3.0L. Found the thread (on Sunday, 2/22/04) and discovered I already have the L/S. Next day I found out for sure when I left work. We have lots of cinders in the parkig lot and when I left I floored it and sure enough 2 long marks where the cinders used to be. Now I know why this little truck does so well in snow!! Find the thread and check it out. It lists pretty much all Ford differentials!!
