This is probably going to sound like an incredibly stupid question, and it probably is, but I am going to ask it anyway. Could you get a normal light bulb and a couple wires and set your own timing light sort of thing? You hook one wire to the #1 cylinder post on the distributor cap, and then whereever the other one has to go? I figure it probably won't. There is no way it can be that simple, but I thought I would ask. Obviously I have never used a timing light before.
You could however, if you have a little electronics knowlege use a Xenon lamp (radio shack), a voltage multiplier, and a small trigger coil (small ballast from a 12V neon lamp (Walmart or A&A ricer auto section) The construction is quite simple, and although it would be a great "See what I did" project, it's cheaper to buy a cheap timing light. IMO

You forgot one important part, the optics to focus the light onto the timing marks on the crankshaft damper......
