Thermostat?

I've been driving my truck lately and noticed the temperature guage doesnt get as "hot" anymore. It used to sit right on the logo, but now it usually sits between (C) Cold and the logo. Almost as if it's not working correctly. Anyone know why it isnt going up all of the way?

I believe the Motorcraft OEM thermostat is about $12 from the Ford dealer.....

That is for the thermostat, can you install it yourself????

Also you need to replace the anti-freeze. Don't use the old stuff. Before you go to all that trouble, make sure the heater is putting out heat. If it is blowing cold or cool after a few minutes of driving, it probably is the thermostat. If it is hot, the problem is the guage or sending unit.

It blows hot air just fine. It's probably the sending unit. What should i do about that?

Replace the sending unit, they've got a reputation for failing prematurely. (Mine did) They're about $10 and easy as a spark plug to install. Lots of people on this site will change the coolant, thermostat and sending unit every 2 years as a matter of routine maintenance.

Not sure what truck yours is, my 4.0L has 2 sending units screwed into the thermostat housing. The single wire unit is for the temp gauge, and the multi-wire unit with quick connect plug is for the Computer. Replace the single wire one and you're off to the races.

I don't know where it is on the 4 cyl.

Generally, it is near the top radiator hose on the engine. I hope that helps.

If anyone has a picture or more of a detailed description, that would be great. I checked around the radiator hose, but wasnt exactly sure.

You should consider buying a haynes repair manual for your year of truck. they help out alot with stuff like this and they usually have pictures. Auto parts stores should have them, probably like 10-15 bucks

I thought the thermostat housing was at the end of the radiator hose, engine side. It should be just two bolts to remove.
