Depends on how you drive. You're not really gonna consider a 3/4 ton/1 ton truck based on mileage are you? What do you plan on doing with your truck. That will dictate what powertrain option is best.
10-12 is a good basis. However, I average 13.2 with my Excursion with the V10 & 3.73's. And it's a heavy monsta too. I would guess in a towing situation that they'd be virtually identical in MPG.
Yeah, those diesels get a better mileage and that debate has been beat into the ground.
The original question was about the 5.4 with 4.10 or the 6.8 with 3.73 gears.
I have the 6.8 with the 3.73 gears and love it. I would guess (key word) that with either setup the mileage would be pretty close. If I were buying again I would definetly get the 6.8L again. I don't have any regrets and the truck runs really good. I average about 10 mpg. I do not baby this truck and it does good for me.
Thanks guys for the prompt response. The truck would be an F250 towing a 5th wheel 10% of the time and loafing around town the other 90%. 4X2 long bed super cab. Need to act soon since the 0% financing runs out on the 14th in my area.
so far in my extra cab 5.4 w/ a 6 speed and 4:10 gears i have averaged 12 mpg out of my first 3 tanks. i expect that as i drive the truck more ill get better mileage.

I know your question pertained to MPG but have you considered your towing weight needs? You'll be able to tow more with a V10 auto than a 6 spd V8.
You should also consider that you'll be cooler with a V10.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Jan-02 AT 08:51 PM (EST)]I'm not sure why I posted transmission types when I meant to put in axle ratios??
Sooooooo, what I meant to say was; you'll be able to pull more with a V10 w/3.73's than a V8 w/4.10's, if it matters to you. I still think mileage is gonna be so close that you'll have to decide based on the fact that you'll still be cooler with those V10 badges than the V8 ones...
i will give you my V10 badges to put on your truck if you want. i like the clean look and just need to schedule some time and a few dollars to have my truck filled and sprayed when i pull off my badging.
as for which will get you more MPG..... the v8 will always win i believe! don't bother with that desiel guy, he is just trying to justify his higher engine cost by telling everyone that he gets better MPG. now it is true that he gets better MPG, but the chance that he runs his truck 300 or 400 thousand miles to offset that cost is another story... now if your doing a lot of heavy pulling, by all means get the desiel, even if you never realize the fuel benefit over that 300 to 400 thousand miles, you will be happier with a truck that can handle the heavy pulling.
now..... all that being said. i would NOT recommend the v8 for a superduty... the truck is too heavy for that v8 and you will be disappointed even if you never pull a load. the extra one or two mpg difference that you will see with a v8 just isn't worth having a dog of a truck in my opinion.
if you want economy, get a moped! lol. these trucks were never really intended for fuel economy, but as a work truck... or for some of us, a platform to make ourselves feel better for having too little in the pants.

hummm.. thank you and well.... i think that guy was upset or something due to the fact that he is deisel owner.
>I'm sorry to hear about your problems, man. I hear that
>women say it doesn't matter, well not that I would know or
>anything. :-staun
dude.... as they say, admitting your problem is half the battle... the lift and the harleys make me ok with the world. lol. as for size not being an issue, i just don't know..... i keep seeing these girls with shirts that say, "SIZE MATTERS!"
abendx,
I too admitted my problem, I have to have the power. Can there ever be too much? Nope! I can see that he wasn't asking about diesels, I just had to throw in one more option
