I have a 1993 5.0L F150 Supercab with a 3:55 ratio/8.8 inch rearend. I want to install a traction-loc rearend. I have seen plenty of them for sale on e-bay out of mustangs and thunderbirds and they say they will fit ANY 8.8 inch open differential. Can anyone tell me for sure? If I buy the complete unit, is it an easy swap out, or do I need special tools? Will I need to strengthen my driveshaft? Will I have to change outmy spindles also?
There could be a spline count difference on the "car" rearends, like a 28 compared to 31 in a truck 8.8. Ring & pinion is not a problem but carrier and axles can be.
The differential is open. the 3 55 would have a letter such as L associated with it if it was Track Lok (limited slip). Since your truck is a 93, your axles will be 31 spline.
I don't know anything about 8.8 rear ends yet but on a 9 inch you can replace the inner splined spider gears from 28 to 31 spline or the other way. Of course you need the correct posi splined pieces as well for where the clutches go. The only thing you can't get away with is a true 28 spline case will have to small of an opening for the 31 spline axle unless you machine it open. Here is the good part though. You can take an open carrier main housing and use it as long as you have the correct carrier posi cove along with the correct posi pieces.
I will some time this year be digging into the 8.8 I have in the yard and see I can do the same things to it. This was just some food for thought.
