We have bought a used '98 Ford Ranger automatic 4x4 and the words one the dash that indicate when you are in Low 4 wheel drive and High 4 wheel drive flash simutaniously 3 times. It'll start out right after it's started and then as you drive more they flash more frequently. I have had the fluid in the transfer case checked and it's okay. We didn't get the manual with the truck so no clue what it's trying to tell me. Anyone know????
The lights start flasing shortly after it is started and then repeats every so often.
In all honesty I have no idea if the 4WD works. The truck was bought for son when he gets his license in a couple months( was a deal I couldn't pass up.....bought from employer for $4000). Since I have had it it has never been put into 4WD.
It's flashing a code from the Gem module. You need a reader to get the code. I would be willing to bet that your shift motor is not engaging the transfer case for whatever reason. Sometimes it's as simple as a loose wire or connection, but more often than not it's the weak shift motor. I just replaced mine, exact same symptoms as yours. Common component failure as I understand.
I appreciate the input and it will be very useful when I take it to the dealer for repair. Very often they attempt to put the screws to a woman but when I start talking like I know what is going on they back off. This is the first time I've used this forum and it is great and I will direct my son here when he takes possesion of the Ranger. Thanks......
If your not a do it yourselfer, a good transmission shop will often be better value than the dealer (and faster too). I'm sure Transmission shops come across this all the time, and if it is in fact your shift motor, many shops will rebuild them instead of replace them. I've never heard of a dealer rebuilding these shift motors.
Thank you for the info. I will call around to some local tranny shops and hear what they have to say. Most times you can tell by just a phone call if they are going to be of any help. I have yet to take it out and actually attempt to engage the 4WD and once I do it'll give me a better idea what is going on. You've been alot of assistance........I appreciate it.
