V-8 or V-10
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Jan-02 AT 05:32 PM (EST)]Welcome to the world of gas-guzzling monsters. If you are looking at a crew cab, one ton truck with a V-10 hauling 3,000 lbs., leave your concerns about mileage at the door
. I don't think you will notice much in the way of mileage difference between the 3.73 and 4.30 rear end. I recommend the 4.30 rear end.

Having had both 4.30 gears (in a previous F250) and now 3.73 gears, I'd definitely choose the 4.30s if I could. While cruising around town, the 4.30s netted about 1mpg less than the 3.73s. But, while towing, the 4.30s actually got about 1mpg better. I suspect this is because the tranny would stay in OD whereas now I have to use 3rd a lot of times. Plus, I'd like that added "UMPH" that 4.30s give when starting off. :-)

Oh Hi,
As for the 3.73 vs 4.3 gearing choice.
I hurt myself trying to make this decision. I tow a 5500 lb trailer, figured 3.73 would be fine. better gas mileage, blah blah blah.
Well the 01' truck I could find with what I wanted had the 4.3
So after reading and searching I finally bought it...and I'm extremely happy.
1) Around Town. Since you can't park the thing, you should at least have good "Drivability" The V10/4.3 combo makes you think your driving a sports car...until you have to stop.
2) Towing 5500 lbs. Allows me to stay in top gear, Torque converter locked. If I had the 3.73 I'm pretty sure it would drop to 3rd, I suppose the torque converter would also be locked. So maybe no diff here EXCEPT towing up a hill...I drop to 3rd Torque converter locked which is good for the tranny. I bet the 3.73 would be unlocked.
Everybody worries about gas mileage...face it, its just bad, oh well.

I call BS on these last few posts!!!!! There is NO way a Super Duty will get over 29.7856 MPG. I have a friend who has a friend whose uncle's brother is a tech at a Gm dealership that knows a wash boy at a Ford dealership and says that you are really screwing over young, poor families that may be contemplating a purchase of a Super Duty based on these MPG figures.
You should all get Super Duties with the 4.6 and modify the he!! out of it because it will then be as powerful as a PSD or V10 but get 40 MPG.
