Help !! 351W vs. 351M

Hey all,
Canany one tell me if there is a " look under the hood " visual difference between the 351W and the 351M ?
Also, did Ford put any C-6 trannys behind the 351W ?
The motor is in an '85 Bronco right now but is gonna be donated to a '78 F-150 4x2. Tranny is bad .
Thanks in advance for any help !!

Don

I think you're gonna have to get a 2WD C6 to put in the F150 unless you want the T-case hanging there.

the 351W and 351M don't share bellhouseings either.
what about rebuilding the tranny thats in the truck now?

did't ford make a C6 for the 351W? Like the 84-86? Will that fit in a 74-79

According to the info I have, the 351M was phased out in 81'. The 400 went away in 82'. I suppose that doesn't matter anyway since you say the engine in the Bronc has 6 bolts in the valve cover which would make it a Windsor.

Weren't most all the pre-OD autos behind the 351W in the pickups and Broncos C6s? Or did they run C5s or C4s in some of them?

Regardless, Ford did make small block bolt pattern C6s in 2wd versions. I've got one I've sitting on for several years now.

There are lots of small pattern C6's out there.

History of the 351C/M/400: http://home.earthlink.net/~bubbaf250/

Engine Identification:
351C/M/400 335 series: 8 bolts in rectangular valve covers. Timing chain housing is part of block. Thermostat housing on block. Exhaust bolt holes diagonal.
351M/400 335 series: intake is 10.7" wide
351W/302/5.0L 6 bolts on trapezoidal valve covers. Thermostat housing on intake. Exhaust bolt holes horizontal.
429/460 385 series: 7 bolts in rectangular valve cover
352/360/390/427/428 FE series: Intake goes under valve covers.
There are other indicators but these may help.

Hey all,
Thanks for the quick answers!! As usual they have all been a very big help.
By the way- the 351M is in my 77 4x4 that is under construction.
The 351W is in the donor Bronco that I am parting out and it will be going in my 78 4x2 that is gonna be painted the same as the 4x4 and the wife will be driving that.

Thanks again for the great answers !!!!!!!

This may be a little late but the 351W has an 11 inch wide intake. Look in my forum pictures, I have a 351W in mine...
