I've got a 94 Explorer with 170,000 miles. It's by far the most comfortable vehicle I've ever owned. She's gettin' old and tired, and I'd like to breathe some life into her. I'm thinking about rebuilding the engine myself (transmission was rebuilt by a shop at 160,000). I've never done this before. I've gotten as far as relpacing head gaskets (not in this vehicle), but never beyond that. I need advice.
Should I attempt to rebuild the engine or replace it with another? I figure that she's not worth much now, I couldn't lose much if I screw up the job. I'll have about 9 months to work on it starting next fall. I want to learn, and I'm going to sign up for an auto mechanics course at the local CC. Is this worth doing?
I think that an undertaking like this is always worth doing, just in experience alone. The question that you need to ask yourself is: Do you think this is a job that you are capable of? Will the auto mech. class teach you enough? If you are prepared for this, then by all means, do it. If not, place it in the hands of people who are.
If you choose to do this, then this site can be an invaluable source of information and help, if you let it.
