My ZR rep tells me the closer to the metal you are, the better ZR performs. In other words, put it on bare metal.
I fabbed some fence posts. The bare metal was prepped with a wire brush and was degreased. Painted with 2 coats of ZR from a rattle can. They have exposed to the Pacific Northwest rains (and an occassional marking by my dog) since 1997. Not a speck of rust has appeared. For me, that's all the proof I need.
Other products may work as well but noone can match the price of ZR. At about $50/gallon, you can't beat the price.
Etched, wire wheel, etched, 2 coats paint. Look good.
Little further down the Pacific Northwest where during the winter Banana slugs rule.
Thanx,
Dave

Yaaa, the slugs. You gots to luv them
Where else can you walk bare foot and not have to worry about getting dirt between the toes. The slugs protect your feet.
