Question 4wd conversion

I have a 1994 F-150 2wd longbox automatic w/5.0, and I'm looking into converting it to 4wd. Can I do that? What all would i need, and approx. how much would it cost? I'm sick and tired of getting stuck in the snow!

The 2wd frames are different than the 4wd frames, however with some welding its very doable.

You need obviously the entire 4x4 front end, springs and shackles, the driveshaft, and the transfer case.

You'll also have to shorten or replace your rear driveshaft, as the transfercase makes you tranny a tad longer.

Pricing depends if you buy a conversion kit (I think Duff makes them as one option? Been a while) or if you get all the parts out of a junkyard and DIY. Obviously the latter is cheaper.

BTW, my 2wd crewcab has never EVER gotten stuck in the snow. Ice, well, thats a different story. Ice sends me sideways a lot.

For all the work and expense and time spent tracking everything down, I think you would be better off selling the 2wd truck and finding a similar year and condition truck that already has factory 4wd. The price difference between 2 like trucks, one 2wd the other 4wd isn't all that much for older trucks, 1000 dollars maybe if you shop carefully.

The only difference in frames is rear spring hangers. 2wd has 2 1/2" wide springs, 4wd has 3". Any 80-96 F150/Bronco can be used for a parts truck. Tech article with more details.

ecarter50: that article was exactly what I was looking for, thank you! I don't have the cash right at the moment for all the parts, so curry69, I'll have to decline your offer, but thank you anyway. After shopping around for quite awhie now, I realize i will save myself a ton of headaches and money if i just look around for a good deal on a 4wd. Thank you everyone
