Wiper problem at speed

Bought a 2000 E-250 a while back. Seems that in the rain, between 45 and 55 mph, my driver side wiper appears to lift off of the window, just in the middle 8 inches or so. I installed new wipers, even swapped the arm off the passenger side, and it still does the same thing, and the passenger side is fine. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Gary

Well, you could try different brands to see if that helps.
I only use Annco or Trico winter blades year round, and have no problems.
Although there are many good brands out there.

Wiper arms require adjustment occasionally. If the blade runs smooth in one direction, and scuffs on the return sweep, either the blade is old, or the arm needs adjusting. It's just a matter of taking 2 adjustable wrenches and placeing them on the arm, and twisting them slightly. [wipers turned off]. If it gets worse, you've turned them the wrong way.
The most important thing is to have a fairly new blade, and a quality brand.

I change mine once a year. I've heard twice a year is best. Some people wait till they self distruct to change them.

Hope this helps!

VanMan311,

In addition to my "new-to-me" E350, I also own an Aerostar that I use, believe it or not, for storm chasing. The A* is considered by many of my peers to have the rottenest, worstest <g> windshield for storm chasing on the planet. I disagree with that assessment, but HAVE found that BOSCH brand wiper assemblies are the only brand that will ALWAYS stay flat on the windshield NO MATTER WHAT. The "slots" in the assembly help prevent the lifting that occurs with many other brands. Yes, they cost more, but I buy 'em for all my cars and don't consider it a luxury item any more...

Another thing for you to think about is that 'ol storm chaser stand-by; RAIN-X. I use it, properly and religiously applied, on all my van windshields and I often times don't even have to use the wipers. It doesn't usually start to "self-shed" water until 50mph (or 10mph and a 40mph headwind!), and it works even better the faster ya go!

Just my thoughts, your mileage may vary...

I have to agree, having had "inexpensive" blades just come flying off during high speed expressway traffic challenges. Well worth an extra few bucks for a years worth of security

Get yourself a set of windshield wipers that are made for high speed applications. They, typically, have a wide piece of plastic that acts as an airdam and presses the blade against the windshield with more force the higher the speed. Many sports cars and muscle cars have them stock. My Z28 has a set and they work.
