Hey monsta, I smelt that too but I could hear it coming first. What's the criteria for building an acceptable disel? I guess if you can hear it coming 10 miles away and start smellin' it 1 mile before it shows up then these disel guys know they got a good one!! What was that again, oh yea, FORDDISEL.COM!!! This is where the rift raft hang out at. This site encompasses the ELITE MEN, the BEST OF THE BEST, V10's make us better. Okay, I've had my fun. Powerstroker is a good engine (just doesn't suit my needs). If I hauled a cattle trailer or something of the sort I'd look a little more into it but my needs don't justify $4,700. No offense intended, just TOUCHET!!! to the previous jab at us gassers.
Anyway, thanks guys for all the replies. I've got it down pad now. By the way monsta, I do know how a 4x4 operates, just didn't know if the manual hubs served as a back-up or what. I'm not that ignorant, well, OK, maybe close!!
Thanks guys!!!
(I think the Disel rigs should come standard with rubber floor mats and a dip bucket for the leaking fuel in the floor board. Just another kidney jab. LOL!!!
les... u know i love ya man!!!! (you know... like a sister! lol)..... just playing with ya!!!!!
and thanks for the complements guys..... we all have kick butt trucks and should all be proud of them..... the superduty is quite the looker in any configuration!!!!

Sorry, wasn't tryin' to insinuate that you didn't. I tend to "over-reply" in some cases. I try to think about the others folks who will be reading these discussions. They might not "know" and I try to help show the "big picture". Hope you weren't offended.
Monsta: Me offended, H@#$ NO!!!! I just appreciate the full explaination. That's cool!! Just giving you "truck NERDS" a hard time. Actually, I'm just jealous!!
By the way, the guy who drives that "SMELLY" disel is correct. We all (Well I will on the 7th) have kick butt trucks. All of us should be excited. I just wish in the middle of a DISEL VS. V-10 conversation that a chevy man would come in and rag us. I gurantee that we'd all stick up for each other; disel for gas and gas for disel!!! And that's my view!!!
Not sure what kinda truck you got, so take this with a grain o'salt.
NO. You should be able to shift into 4HI with your hubs locked while moving so long as your going less than say 55mph. I would really get a manual for your truck if don't already have one. They got 'em here.
Again, we don't know what vehicle we are dealing with... but the logic is the same:
If the front hubs are locked -- meaning the front driveline is turning when the front wheels are turning -- you can go from 2HI to 4HI and vice versa at ANY SPEED... as long as you are not in a slipping scenario. In other words, if you aren't busting your rear tires loose you can make the shift at any speed. If you don't have control over the hubs, this may not apply. Some vacuum engaged hubs that do not have manual override may need to be engaged under a certain speed. But, if you have manual hubs that are locked in, or a 4x4 that does not have hubs (the front driveline is ALWAYS turning -- like my Expedition), you can engage 4x4 at any speed.
I will go out on a limb and say no matter what 4x4 we are talking about, do not shift from HI to LO or vice versa while moving. I haven't seen a transfer case with synchronizers to allow for this. The first time you try it you will hear and feel gears grinding.
My understanding and experience says that you have to be stopped to go from 4HI to 4Lo. With a manuel transmission you can just step on the clutch while shifting, and with an automatic you have to put the tranny in neutral to make the shift. But you should be able to shift from 2hi to 4hi on the go with the hubs locked as long as your not going over 55 and not slipping. I always just let off the gas if I'm slipping and pull the lever then gas it again and go (except on a steep slope then I have to step on the clutch and stop then take off again). This is just some of my thoughts.
