i know what u mean. the good news is the new (or rebuilt) pump should have a filter in it already. mine was a remanufactured one from autozone. the kid behind the counter said it had one in it so i made them get it open so i could check and it did. i had to turn the pump and he turned the can. takes elbow grease i reckon.

yes the new pump already has one in it. i have found that sometimes you need to buy a new canister and just ram a screwdriver thru the old one. i have had to do that twice. i no longer put my canister on any tighter then just after it stops leaking.

I am with bob on this one. replace the pump with a carter pump (thats what I run) or if you want to stay stock, just use a later model pump 1975 or later. then put an in line filter in. I use two, one between the fuel tank and the pump then one between the pump and carb. hope this helps.
