Hello, I realize that others have posted about guages, but mine seems a bit different, as it kinda works, just is way off. When I can't get any more in, it will read 3/4, and then a few miles later I'd be lucky to read 1/4. The reference from the guage pulses, is this normal? If I use the test light as a ground, it will read 1/2.This happens on both tanks, so am I dealing with a failing guage? This truck has plenty of miles, so it's possible to have screwed up both senders, in my experience the rear seems to fail faster, for whatever reason. The truck in question is a 86 F250 4x4 diesel. Thanks for any help.
A test light doesn't make for a very good alternate ground. Try making up a new ground strap. Also, check the ground(s) for the instrument cluster.
I'm kind of surprised that the gas guages work at all, being an 86. My 88 F379 diesel lost the rear guage after about 2 years.
If you can't get them working with all good grounds, you'll probably have to replace the senders. That is of course, if you really want a guage.
