Can anyone make any suggestions. I have an 88 Ranger with a 2.9v6 engine. The truck has a fuel delivery problem. I will run fine and then It starts to surge and then cut off. When It start this the fuel pump on the chassis starts to sound different. I cant tell if it is bad or if the fuel filter is stopped up or the in tank pump has issues. I cannot hear a pump in the gas tank, I don't know if it is working or not, should I be able to hear this low pressure pump?
After the truck cuts off I can turn the ignition on and off several times and listen for the chassis pump to pressureize then the truck will start and run for a min or two.
Is it possible for the truck to crank and run some with the in tank fuel pump being bad? I do not hear it at all.
Look in your Haynes manual, the 88 only had the in tank pump i believe. As pawpaw sez start with the simple stuff first & change the fuel filter. If that doesnt do it check the fuel pressure.
Originally posted by pawpaw Mach, the next time it does this, try loosening the fuel tank cap, & see if it starts & runs ok.
If it does, replace the cap.
If the fuel filter has never been replaced, now would be a good time to do it. IMHO
Did this problem begin suddenly, or slowly & intermittently over some period of time.
Thanks. I loosened the cap and also removed the cap. It didnt make any difference. I have a new filter and am going to replace it anyway. This problem happend suddenly. I really believe in in tank pump is gone bad but will investigate further. Thanks for your suggestions.

Thanks 87 XLT. I have verified that the truck has an inline high pressure pump. These were used from 1985-1988 on the ranger and in 1989 they switched to the single in tank pump design.
OOPS, I thought 88 was the first single pump year, now I know. Just listened to my 87 & I CAN hear both pumps. Good luck with it. If you dont hear the in tank pump, give the tank a good whack with your hand, if that gets it going, replace it.
Mach10533, also check the pumps fuse connections, electrical wiring & connections for damage, corrosion, loose contact, & especially a poor ground, (loose, rusty, corroded)
Yup, & change that filter, if it's never been done on an 88, it's loooong over do. pawpaw
When the problem began suddenly, had you just filled up at a different station, or had the station's tanks just been filled?
