headers/glasspacks??

Ok, so I'm looking at getting some headers for my 400 and also some new glaspacks. I was wondering what types of headers/glasspacks are good for my motor. All that has ben changed/or will be changed is that I am going to be having a 4bbl intake with a Holley 600CFM carb. Thanks for your input.

I can tell you from experience, headers wont make a noticeable difference on your motor. As far as glass packs, Ive always liked Thrush or Cherrybombs, but they are all pretty much the same.

Headers should make more power, and you were asking what glasspack to run, so I'll tell you from experience, Dynomax Bullet's rock!!!!!! Also, you could try running 2 1/4" straight pipes.

Well I will quickly mention my experience and opinions. I got the dynomax headers that are the full length inside-the-driveshaft version. I think the factory manifold are very restrictive. I also have a dual 2.5" exhaust with some old abused glasspacks. Its very loud. After the exhaust job there was noticable gain in power and acceleration across the board. If you rev the engine in nuetral, it revs to redline in less than half the time it did before. There might have been a slight loss in torque right from idle (due to the much lower backpressure and slightly oversized pipes) but I say 1,500 rpms and up was noticably improved (not a lot, but noticable). It also makes the exhaust sound a bit different.

You dont have a lot of options for headers but if you did: longer tube (primaries) headers make more low rpm power, shortie headers make more upper rpm power, skinnier primaries make more low rpm power, larger diameter primaries make more upper rpm power, and tri-y headers make more mid range power because they are a mix of both.

Best of luck with your exhaust

headers are your "biggest bang for the buck" modification you can do. you don't want the big 1 7/8" primary tubes. 1 5/8" or 1 3/4" is plenty. believe it or not, glasspacks are considerably restrictive. this might work well for keeping some backpressure though. i'll try to find the muffler flow comparison and post it.

For the exhaust I'm going to have it exit before the rear wheel, so I know that it will be a lot louder than now but I don't really like the loud crack that straigh pipes so. I want a more even sound, not something that just quits cracking as soon as you take your foot of the go pedal.

I am very surprised by those flow results. SOme of those numbers I guess I would have to see to beleive. According to that chart then my glasspacks flow like oem style mufflers?!? I dont think so. Especially the ones that are just perforated cores and smooth on the inside, other than a minor amount of turbulence, I dont see how they can be very different from straight pipes for flow. Of course I always had my eye on the hooker aero chambers and max flows so I guess I am on the right track with that thinking.

coolmint94, you can look at my 78 Bronco gallery at what I did for my exhaust exiting infront of the rear tires, i got several pictures of my exhaust parts. Pretty simple design and cheap, nothing fancy. I have lots more pictures too. I warn you though, the underside of the truck isnt that pretty
