Key/Ignition Chime

Just wanted to check if anyone knew how to stop the chime that sounds when you open the door and your keys are in the ignition. My '96 Ranger consistently sounds this chime when the truck is running and the doors are completely closed. The only way I have found to stop it is to pull its fuse, which also controls the odometer, speedometer, and wipers. If someone could give me some insight I would truly appreciate it.

The problem is probably with your door switches. Some have the old pin type that mounts in the forward door jamb, and others have switches made into the latch mechanism. WD40 seems to fix most situations.

Open you door and try listening to find where the sound is coming from, I hated the chime in my diesel ford that told me the lights were on, I found that this is the only chime in the truck so now there is no sound letting me know my glow plugs are warmed up. So I kept my lights on, opened the door (chimes goes on) and started looking for the sound, I found it under the dash in the middle of the truck, there is a wiring harness that goes into the little module. Just take the wiring harness off, put a little tape over the end of it and leave it disconnected, you will never have a chime again. Good luck

Be careful what you do. If your 96 is at all like my 2000, and I think it is, the door chime is in the dash on something that looks like a computer board. When I pulled mine out, it blew a couple of fuses. I dont know if I shorted them out or what. After I changed them, every thing was back to normal but with no chime. Good Luck.

Mine blew a fuse too, disconnect the negative battery terminal when you do this procedure.
