My 1985 F150 has a problem and I cant find anyone who knows what it is. While driving it will suddenly begin to bog down. It feels like I am pulling a heavy trailer. (like a tractor pull) It feels like its trying to go but as I pull off the road it just wont move. BUT it will idle just fine, and the engine will rev just like normal. Put it in gear and try to move...and no power. Sometimes it will be fine if I wait awhile. But it usually means a ride on a tow truck. If anybody has an idea please let me know.
Well, it looks like you came to the right place! Welcome to FTE! Can you give us some particulars on your truck? (engine/trans)? I'd say in a case like yours getting out of the truck and finding out what is hot is going to tell you what's wrong! If the brakes are dragging you'll be able to tell just by feeling the rims to see if they are hot. When they tow it does it roll freely? If the wheels aren't hot check the transmission or around the pinion area on the rear. If you have a manual transmission check the lube level in it. Take it for a drive but stick close around the house and check it out!!
I have a 302 V8 2bbl with a C6 tranny. The carb was replaced 2 years ago. The engine was replaced about 5 years ago when the oil pump went out at 85,000. So the new factory engine has about 67,000 on it. I want to say that it is not when I am pulling anything. It just feels like all of a sudden I am pulling a trailer. I can pretty much say its not the brakes because a couple times I have had to roll backwards down a hill, and also had to push it off to the side of the road and it rolled freely. It will sometimes go a mile or two before it acts up. Or sometimes I can be on the freeway for a half hour before it gives me trouble. The pinion I will check this morning and get back to you. Let me know if you have any other ideas in the meantime.
I checked the diff and it was less than a half pint low. I topped it off and took it for a drive. I was getting on the freeway less than a mile from my house and it did it again. How do I know if the trans is too hot. With its normal temp, added with an exhaust pipe on each side it is already cookin under there. The fluid and filter was changed less than 15,000 ago, and is a little brown but doesnt seem fried. I considered changing the fluid today but I have already dumped so much cash into it lately I held off until I heard back from you.
