Question Steering linkage?????

Went to get front end aligned and they could not because they said the link between the pitman arm and the outer tie rod had 1/2" of play. Found the part at a local auto store for $49. Does not look that hard to replace. The alignment shop wanted $179 for the part and $80 for labor. Thats a pretty high markup on the part. Is there any thing i need to know before doing this? i know that I need to measure the threads between the tie rod and the Link, then get it properly aligned.

Thanks

Chris

It's that easy. Find a good way to measure the length of it, so it will be very close with the new part (I usually measure zirk to zirk). You will need a tie rod seperating tool (pickle fork) to seperate the drag link from pitman arm. Be sure to get it aligned right away so you don't wear/hurt anything else.

Iould do it soon, that is a joint where a ball sits inside the housing, it could pop out on you. Instead of measuring the threads, just count them as you turn the old one out, then count the new one in same many turns.

What about just marking it with a sharpie or something would that also work?

What ever is easiest for you, you just want to end up in the right spot, the counting turns is a method I was taught.
