Hello all, I am new to this site and was hoping someone could help me with a problem I'm having with my 1993 explorer. I just bought it last week, mainly for a get to work and back vehicle. It has the push button 4x4 activation feature and was working fine when I bought it (off course) but I went to engage it this morning and nothing....no wierd noises, no sound of the transfer case attempting to engage...nothing. Now I am not to familiar with these SUV's but I am hoping that maybe there is a fuse somwhere that may have blown or the switch just went bad... because like I said before last week it worked just fine. The truck is a 2 door sport if that makes a difference or not with an auto trans and 4.0 engine. mileage is high, but runs great...any help would be most appreciated!

Hi Jason, it seems like you did'nt get any answers about
your 4x4 problems, Did you find ou the problem?
the reason I ask ,Is my son is thinking of buying a 91 4x4
and it also does not engage, So he is not sure if it is a minor problem or a Major one, Please let me know if you know something. Thanks Tim
There are numerous posts on this forum about early model Explorer 4wd problems. Suggest you do a search. If the light on the dash comes on when you put it in 4wd, and it doesn't engage, then it is mostly the shifting motor in the trans. There are good instructions on this site as to how to troubleshoot and repair it. Also, if you are looking at a '91 and it's an AT and has more than 125k on it, make sure you test the trans. Best to test it when it is stone cold and look for slippage or inability to go into gear. Also, look for rust in the rear rocker panels and fender wells. Lastly, check the radius arm bushings.
Thanks for your response MARRAGTOP, I am not sure how to move around on this site quite yet, To gain the tech info I need.
The 91 my son is looking at to buy is infact an auto trans. and his
4 wheel indicator lights do not light up when trying to engage the
4X4, I will try again to look through out the forums for the answer
as to whether or not there can be a fuse blown to cause this problem.
Thanks again: Tim
I have the same problem this year in my 93 explorer. I have had the truck many years and this problem just showed up this year. I found that I can get in to 4x4 if I push the 4x4 button, then push the 4x4 low button. The low engages. Then I push the low button again to disengage the low and it it remains in 4x4 high.
