Hi everyone! Have a 95 f150xl ext. cab with front brakes that always lock up when applying the brake. Very dangerous when driving on ice and snow! Have already changed the calipers and are constantly lubing the caliper bolt sleaves. Is there any adjustments that can be made because it seems like the back brakes are not doing any work when stopping? Any info. would be appreciated. TIA
The problem is the rear brakes. If they are out of adjustment, the fronts will be overly sensitive. Sounds like the adjusters or the wheel cylinders may be frozen. Basically, you need to take the rears apart, clean them up, put in new shoes if reguired, check the wheel cyls and replace if required, bleed the lines and lube and set the adjusters. Get a repair manual, it's an easy job.
Forgot to mention that when the front wheels are off the ground the wheels don't turn freely because of the pads dragging on the rotor. I noticed when changing the factory brake pads the inside pad was siliconed to the piston, I guess so when the piston retracted the pad would move with it away from the rotor. I didn't bother redoing the silicon. Is this the way FORD compensates for poor functioning calipers?
Finally replaced my back brakes. Biggest problem I had was holding the brake cable guide in place while trying to hook up the springs. So I put some grease on the back side of the guide plate so it would stick to the shoe. That helped alot. Brakes now seem to work more evenly with less braking to the front as strangeranger had suggested.
