Why do many of the '96-present Explorers with >60K miles appear to be "squatting" in the back? Their rear tire clearance is less than the front tire clearance.
That could depend on a few things. Most explorers will sit up to one inch lower in the rear by design. If you have air shocks and they are bad, it will sag as well. If you have regular shocks and they are toast, then i could sag. Of course you may have a totally different situation but those are common. If you are hauling a 1000 lbs of manure in the rear cargo space--then you're nuts-and it will sag
1) Torsion bars - if they are turned higher, it raises the front end. You can loosen the torsion bars and it will bring the front end down some.
2) Illusion - The front fenderwell is cut higher than the rear. It gives it the look that the rear is lower than the front, when actually the X is sitting level.
I would jack the front up and loosen the torsion bars slightly, and set the X back down to make the front end about half an inch lower...
First thing to check/replace would be the shocks. I wouldn't mess with the Torsion Bars. You will need to get an alignment after you mess with them and you will be getting an alignment at least once a year after that. Get a set of Warrior Shackles for the back. It will raise the back about and inch and actually helps soften the ride a little.
Can you give a website or two that would carry the Warrior shackle kit for Explorer. Any numbers I need to have before ordering? How easy to install?
I've got a '97 AWD that could use a little lift in back. I've recently replaced all 4 shocks with Monroe Reflex, so I don't think I want to switch out for air shocks in the rear.
Thanks for any help!
