Axles

Can anyone please explain to me the difference in axles. Advantages of one over the other, ie 3.55 3.73 4.10.

Ok try this.

3.55 ratio = less engine rpm for a given speed, beter fuel millage. Also less power.

3.73 ratio = more engine rpm for a given speed, less fuel millage. Also more power.

4.10 ratio = you don't want it unless you plan on pulling a 747 aircraft down the interstate.

Hope that clears it up for you.

The choice of axle also has a lot to do with which truck it would be in. For example; often the lighter smaller trucks (reg cab) will often have 3.55 and maybe no trailer option on them. The bigger ones like SuperCrew with trailer option will often have 3.73 for pulling some good sized loads. And a few of the "Big Payload and Big Towing" F150's will have the 4.10 which is only available on a couple of models.

If you 'build' your truck online and order the 18" rims, you get automatically switched from 3.55 to 3.73.

I'm telling you, Go 4.10. The rpm increase is minimal (about 2100 at 70 mph). Fuel mileage is not the greatest, but I can still accelerate carrying a heavy payload going up steep hills. Don't cut yourself short.
