Need help with starting problem

02 Mountaineer 40K miles

Turn the key to on - all accessories work
Turn the key to start - I get nothing, no noise at all

My first thought was low battery
But head lights are bright, took battery for load test and is fine.

Bad battery connection?
terminals are very clean and tight

Bad fuse?
all fuses look clean

Bad relay?
Not sure don't know how to check. Any suggestions?

Anti theft / key code
Theft light initially illuminates then shuts off after 3 seconds. Just as owner manual describes. I don't think this is an issue.

Gear selector not sending the right signal?
Not sure and don't know how to check. Tried starting in neutral but it made no difference.

Bad ground on starter?
I'm not sure but will check shortly by checking if the power cable has voltage when the key is turned.

Bad ignition switch?
I don't know and don't know how to check.

What else should I look at? Any other suggestions?

I'm stuck and need to get the truck running.

Thanks for your help

Have you looked for fuses blown. The owners manual will give you a description and location. Let us know and good luck.

To test the Gear selector, put your foot on the brake hold the key to the start and pull the gear selector down to slowly to revese and see if it starts if it does then you have to have it ajusted.

I finally had the truck towed home and put in on a jack stand so that I could look at the starter. The small cable to the starter was broke off at the clip. 50 cents and 10 minutes later its fixed.

Thanks for your help.

FYI The clip that Ford uses is small and cheap. If you have starting problems take a look at this cable.

I have a similar starting problem. I got in my 99 expl today and turned the key. All accesories came on and I turned the key to start and...nothing. Didn't even attempt to turn over. I turned the key to off and then tried to start again and it started. It did this periodically throughout the day. At one point I didn't think I was going to get it to start but eventually it did. Does anyone have any suggestions?
