Water Pump

Could a water pump leak coolant back into the Oil, and if so how. Trying to chase down a coolant leak and keep from going into a pin hole search on the Cylinders

1sg,still trying to chase that leak, you must be rotted by now.4 of the bolts that hold the pump on call for rtv sealant,i dont know if coolant could get past them into the block, however they call for it for some reason.

SG ... have you changed the water pump recently and if so, did you put rtv sealant on the bolts requiring it? If that is not the solution, I'd venture to guess a head gasket may have let you down. get under the engine and look along the head sealing edge and see if there is coolant showing up there, under the exhaust manifold flanges before you start looking into pinholes. Good luck and keep us posted.

Checked the head gasket all around, had the Valley Pan Gasket off yesterday also and so no visible leakage, had a dye running through the cooling sysytem to help in my search and no joy, all exhaust flanges are fine. The only signs are coolant in the oil. No smoke either. I thought i had read about a seal of sort on the water pump shaft that could go and cause seapage back into the front end of the block maybe into the timing gear case. No I have not yet removed the WP, it looks very old, and settled in.

No I have not removed the Oild Cooler, I thought that seeing how oil was not in the coolant, then I was good on that, there are no visible leaks there.

Yeah,as a rule with the oil press being higher than the coolant press you would see oil in the rad.I hate to say this but, ithink those heads need to come off.

It should be pretty obvious,if there is a gasket missalignment problem,or a cracked gasket.Might wanna have the heads checked for cracks, if there is no visible problem.I dont know how much of a problem head warpage is on these engines.

OK, well it's action time, took a drive a got a friend who is gonna let me use his bay and tools. Now I'm gonna need a price list. Local machine shop that did my valve job will pressure test for 50$ sleeve 4 holes for around 300$ but I have to take the whole motor apart, crank out and all. Need a shopping list for putting it back together, any advice from the crowd would be great. I gotta lean towards the cheap side, I'm in the middle of a move. Hopefully I simply find a blow heead gasket. Pulling it tommorrow, anyone wanna help, haha

Man I was gonna run right down and give you a hand, I have removed and replaced two motors in mine in 65 days. I even have a turbo on mine, but I looked at your under hood pics and decided I would stay in WVa.

We swaped mine in 10 hours, but it looks like you have a little more stuff to take off than I did.

Actually, I tool mine out last time by myself in 10-12 hours and same for install. haha. Would love a hand, I'm in the beggin mode for an experianced hand. I'm using the on-post auto craft shop here at Ft Bragg. The experiance in there is on oil changes and normal services, so I'm on my own.
