Changing trans fluid

Changing trans fluid
Engine is currently out of truck. I had to pull torque converter out with it because crank is locked up. with the torque converter out can I just dump the fluid out instead of removing the drain plug? Will the end result be the same? Next, is there a drain plug to lower the fluid level in the trans before I drop the pan. And finally, What fluid is best for the 4R70W. P.S. this forum is great. I could read this all night. Wait, I think I already did.

You can just dump it out but when you are done flush out the T/C also. The tranny only has a drain in the pan if someone (owner) has put one there. If not there is no way to drain, just loosen the bolts and allow the fluid to drain into a large pan. The tranny is also in need of a flush at this time. Look at the pan bottom for any signs of metalic dust or other goodies when changing the fluid.

I agree with archer!!
In addition to what archer said, check out this URL to find the
correct ATF to use:

When you have the pan off your tranny, be extra careful to keep everything clean, even use lint free cloths!!
Good luck, and welcome to FTE!!!!

fluid
Hey I refered to that fluid and chart and found it to be rather annoying, the 4R70W takes Mercon V, which is a synthetic and rather expensive...almost 20 bucks a gallon at my dealership in AZ. The 4R70W in my 97 took 13 quarts after I drained the pan and the T/C.
How many miles are on your transmission? I've heard that flushing a high mileage tranny can be destructive and that if you drain the T/C and the pan every 30K it isn't really necessary to flush it. Reads like the other guys who have posted on here will disagree with me on that though.
Oh yea, the gasket on the transmission pan is re-usable.
