Question about my 5.8L

Hello,
I have recently bought a 96'Bronco and it has an oil leak. I got under it yesterday and it is dripping off the bell housing, so I figure that it is a rear main seal. I will clean it up and ensure it isn't the pan or valve cover gasket before I go any further.
My biggest concern is my oil pan. It looks like it has gotten extremely hot before. All of the paint is cracked and chipped and it has begun to rust where the paint has fallen off. It actually looks like metal after it has been through a fire. Is this normal? The engine runs fine and the oil pressure is always normal. Is it possible that it ran hot before and ruined the oil pan gasket. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

If I do decide to drop the pan and replace the gasket, how much time am I looking at on average?

I don't think you have anything to worry about on that pan with the paint. Replacing the oil pan gasket usually means lifting the engine up some. Replacing the valve cover gaskets are easier, but still not a 10-minute job; you'll have to remove the plenum if you want to do the right side. Actually, when you've done it enough, you can do it all in about 20-30 minutes.
