I am in the market for a new engine for my baby. She has the original 5.0L EFI with an A.O.D.E. trans. w/221,000 miles and is just starting to show signs of wear. I want to upgrade to a 5.8L. Do I need a new ECU for a 5.8L. I have heard that the ECU in the truck now will work with the 5.8L. Is this true? Also what kind of engine should I go with, I have had a hard time finding a good source for ford performance crate engines other than jegs. And they dont really do much ford.
The computer will run the engine, although probably not optimally. It wouldn't be hard to change the computer since the wiring harness should be the same.
ok, so i can use a 5.8L ECU with my harness? that would have been my next question. what about the tranny, its an e4od. will i have any compatibility problems(electronically, not mechanical) if i swap to 5.8L. i also have a hypertech performance tuner 2 chip currently installed on the ECU, would there be any chance that my stock ECU with the chip would control the 5.8L any better.
sorry if my questions sound stupid, this will be my first engine swap(with an engine that has an ECU). i used to swap out older non ecu carbeurated engines with no probs(Jeez, i miss my 77 F-250-460ci). but these darn computers have to make everything difficult.
I would try it with the 302 computer before you go out and buy something new. You could probably also get the chip reflashed to account for the larger engine.
