This is a question regarding my Dad's '00 SD F-350 4x4 PSD. The truck has an ATS 70hp chip, 4" turbo back exhaust, cold air intake box and 10k mod. It has a 6 speed manual trans. The problem is at a low speed idle, (little or no pressure on accelerator pedal), in 1st or 2nd gear the truck seems to "buck" or "surge" instead of idle along smoothly. Anybody else have this problem? If so, is there a fix?
I don't think it is the clutch and it's not the 10K mod (just installed 10K yesterday), as the truck has done it for the past 4-5 months, in fact it's done it prior to any aftermarket modifications. It's more of an annoyance than anything, other than that the truck runs great.
Thanks for the input cookie88, how did the clutch effect your truck? Was there a reason you had it changed? diesel-lady mentions the clutch in her response as well. There's no slippage on our truck or anything to elude to a clutch problem.
(just for reference the 10K mod made no dramatic change on this truck, probably because it is "chipped", but I'm sure it could have added to the problem.)
I seem to have an affliction for high horsepower and smokey burnouts. I was actually suprised the stock clutch lasted as long as it did. I think the "buck" is caused by the injectors cycling on and off in low/no throttle applications, and we handshakers don't have a nice soft hydraulic pump absorbing the blows for us. I do know that the aftermarket clutch makes for a much smoother transition.
If the 10K didn't make a dramatic change (at least at idle and low speeds) you might not have gotten a good contact, or the resistor is installed backwards. It should be bucking harder with the increased oil pressure squeezing the injectors harder and faster.
