What causes this?

I just wanted to what cause an engine to backfire/pop during deceleration? I've been told its either not enough back pressure or the engine is runing to rich. I dont know which one to lean toward any help wpould be great. Thanks Scott

could also be timing off or vacuum leak.

Check low timing and firing order. If the motor has been modded check valvetrain to see if any of your intake valves are being held open during ignition.

If it's backfiring out the exhaust, look for exhaust leaks near the exhaust manifold and check your spark plugs to see if you are running rich.

Also had a stock carb with the throttle shafts severly worn letting it suck in air. it would pop and rumble when slowing down. I kind of thought it sounded pretty good though. Wish I could get that sound back with these silly flow masters
