The Explorer trucks were a special edition model. They were available in either Custom or Ranger trim levels. The Explorer package featured special striping on the sides, an Explorer hood ornament, special wheel covers, upgraded interior trim, Explorer emblems on the bed, and chrome bed rails. The first truck I ever owned was a 79 F150 Custom Explorer. It was silver with orange stripes. Ranger is a trim level. It is the next step up from Custom. Ranger trucks had upgraded interiors with more options and chrome trim on the body. Personally, I think the chrome trim looks nice on these trucks and wouldn't remove it.
i have been trying to figure this out for quite a long time now thank you.Mine has Explorer on the hood and on both sides on the back of the bed. on the top near the windshield it says F-250 then Ranger below inside on the glove box it says Ranger. It also has the bed rails and HAD the ugly orange and peach stripe. Thanx All!!!!!!!

Reason: Addition
Had the Ugly Orange and Peach Stripe? Makes them less rare (imo)... But then again, I've seen a Light BLUE 79 Explorer with those colored pinstripes. Talk about sick.
In the '73-79 years of trucks I like the 1976 Explorer Stripes the best. Really nice. Ford changed the stripes depending on year...
I really like the 1981 Explorer stripes too! but I'm a little biased! see my gallery.
Take a look in the gallery, there are a few F-series with the Explorer package, still with their original stripes.
