I have a 98 Sport with 120k, at approx 2500rpm i get what sounds like a chain dangling on the ground or a rattle type sound..anyone ever have this problem,,or would this be that timing chain tensioner with the extended warranty by ford???
Could be the timing chain tensioner issue, depend on which engine you have. The timing chain tensioner issue applies to the 4.0 L SOHC V6 engine. Other options available for '98 Explorers (and to which this issue doesn't apply) were 4.0 L OHV V6, and 5.0 L OHV V8.
Just wondering Bajtra,, what was the actual problem,, i'd hate to have to change the timing chain, i just changed spark plugs ,well 4 of them before i got ****ed off.
Good luck with the timing chain. I have something broken in that area. Have not had it tore down to verify. I am going rounds with Found on Road Dead company over this. All this happened 10 days after the warranty and 1000 miles out of warranty. This is the 7/100k warranty that Ford extended on the cam chain area. The best part is that Ford only sends the TSB out once, and they do not consider the vehicle dieing out at highway speeds and losing all power steering and braking a safety issue. If your their wife and kids were killed in an accident due to this, I bet it would be a safety issue.
I called FORD and had a supervisor call me back. Had such a bad spanish accent that I could barely make out what she was saying, when I asked to have her boss call me back, she said that she was the highest person that I could talk to. She would not have her boss, the VP of customer relations, to call me back.
If you have anyway to contact them, please let me know.
my problem was a rattle when my engine got up around 2300rpm. They had to replace the timing chain tensioner. They said it wasn't covered under any recalls or anything.
I found my letter from Ford today about the timing chain tensioner. Its Service Program #01m01 good from 7 yrs from the warranty start date of your vehicle or 160000 kms, whichever comes first, Its for the front cam chain guide.
Well, well, I finally took my truck to the Ford dealer regarding my problem with my letter from Ford in hand. They said they will not replace the Tensioner at this time because it is not making enough noise at this time. They said that every 4L SOHC makes this noise at that approx. RPM which is a load of crap. I took him for a drive, letting him drive of coarse. He said it was not bad enough yet. Well here we go. I said to him, well , when is it bad enough, when it breaks and the engine goes. Of coarse, 4L never break.. Yeah right..So of coarse its time for another phone call to Fords head office , its fighting time again. Also they said i i need r/lower ball joint & l/upper control arm due to a clunking noise in the front end of my truck. Something i addressed to them 8 months ago, they repair the sway bar end bar links or something like that , what a bunch of scammers. Anyone live in Northern Ontario and know of a good dealer that can do there jobs right?
I am having a timing chain problem maybe you can help??
I just got back from the dealer, he said it sounds like the tensioner to him, he also said 99% of time it is the tensioner. I of course find this convieneint since the tensioner ONP expires at 72k and I have 85k but the cam chain guide expires at 100k and mine makes noise from idle all the way through the rpm's. It does it form start up to shut down. It is a metallic rattleing sound that is somewhat random (meaning its not a constant slap or tick, but more of a loose rattle. Does this sound like the tensioner or the guide??????????????????/
mine sounds like a chain rattling, it doesn't do it all the time only at certain RPMs. I would take it to another dealer , which i'm going to do and i'm probably going to call customer relations to make sure that i did take it in just incase anything goes wrong. I don't know if it would sound any diff, if it was the guide or the tensioner. I think if the tensioner is crap , the chain would ride more on the guide, i think!! Probably the tensioner. Make a complaint to Customer Relations, maybe they'll help you out, but from my experience with them, they know jack all about their vehicles.
My engine locked up. I've been to 3 garages with it. The guys told me that my chain got thrown. Initially, they said it would cost $1200, but now that the engine was pulled, they are saying I need a new engine.
Any thoughts on that? I feel like I'm getting worked over...
