E4od?
My question is, has Ford resolved their E4OD problem with the carrier bearing going out in the center of tranny. I have a 93 F-250 4x4 ext cab. 460 w/ an E4OD that went out at 86,000 miles and it cost me 2500 to get fixed. (Several upgrades included)
Looking thru all the posts on Expeditions here it scares me a little. I realize any vehicle is going to have its share of problems, but do you think this year/model is worse than average? Thanks again for any feedback.

They don't use that tranny any more. The 4R100 replaced it a few years ago. Furthermore, I don't think they use the 4R100 any longer either. I read somewhere that all new Expys come with the 4R70W.
As a sidenote, I think the 4R100 is simply an updated E4OD...but I could be wrong on that.
Anything specific I should look for, as being a problem? I noticed that while browsing all the posts that some rear end problems have been experienced, and brake dust seems to be a big problem. Just a thought, but could the brake dust be primarily on the advance-trac models? Doesn't that design apply the brakes to the wheel that it thinks is slipping?
Just a thought, you guys have more knowledge about auto mechanics than I do. "Drivewizard" applys to a software program that I use for VFD's. Has nothing to do with Autos.
Thanks again.
A simple way to avoid it is if the truck your looking at was built before 12/03 tell the dealer new pads (parts & labor) should be included in the deal at no additional cost to you.

It says all 2003 Expy's got the 4R70W tranny.
Furthermore, I've found several sites with 2004 specs and none mention the tranny version. All say both the 4.6 and 5.4 get a 4 Speed Electronic Controlled Automatic OD Transmission. However, Eric Mowrer posted a link a month ago to a Ford site that gave very detailed Expedition information:

a 4R100 is actually an E4OD with all the bugs worked out of it
Background: My E4OD is starting to go,(approx 130k mi) and I am considering replacing it with a R4100, if the dollars are about the same. It's in a 94 F150 with a 300 six.
I was looking in the specs section of the 03 manual and it says "4R70W"
Ford may have made a transition and might have used both for a while on early build 2003's and now only uses the 4r70w....pure speculation though.
After consulting with the Ford service DVD and numerous trips out to the truck I have the 4R70W transmission with my 5.4L.
If the sticker looks like this, you have the 4R100.

If the sticker looks like this, you have the 4R70W.

The sticker on the 4R70W is behind some heat shield on the passenger side of the transmission.
Also on my door sticker the "TR" field has a "U" which indicates this transmission.

The next question is, why did Ford switch exclusively to the 4r70w? Maybe they thought the 4r100 was overkill for the low power the 4.6L and 5.4L V8's make???
