vaccume leak??

vaccume leak??

how can you tell if you have a vaccume leak?? are there any signs?? i have a 1997 f150 4.2l

Basically, just spray some carb cleaner around the gasket areas of the intake and throttlebody. Also spray around the vacuum lines. If the idle changes, then you have found a leak.

Signs are it will run like crap and will start to die at idle.

If you do have a vacuum leak the O2 sensors on both banks (one on each exhuast header) should have turned the warning lite on for a lean condition. I believe the code is actually 170 and 171 - 2 codes, one for each side.
This has recently happened to me on both my Merc Sable and my 97 150. In both cases I had a leak on the PVC line. It was the rubber boot directly connected to the intake manifolds.

ok thanx guys i will check out the intake and lines, yes the truck runs like crap, idles really ruff, hard starting, i have scanned it and theese are the codes i get, p0304, p0306, p1000, which are #'s 4&6 misfires, can lean problems cuase this?? also, koeo? p1000, koer, p1151, p1000, p1138, p1157, p1703, p1116, any ideas?? just replaced plugs and wires thats when the problems started, actually burned up #5 plug, fuel pressure is good 35psi and holds, coil seemed to test good to, so any more ideas would be great!
