Do any of y'all know what the rating is on the receiver hitch that comes on the SD's. Would it be different from the F-250 to the F-350.
I have a 99' F-350.
A class 5 bumps these up to 12,500 lbs. for a weight carrying hitch.
I'd guess that Ford is being much more conservative by stating max trailer weight of only 5,000 lbs. for any F150 to F350 truck without a weight distributing hitch.
250 and 350 have the same hitch. i think it is 8000lb but it sure looks the same as a 10,000 lb one. if it is a factory hitch i would not worry too much about over weighting it. from what i have seen looks like the truck would rip in half before anything would ever happen to the hitch. have seen powerstroke's putting out 800+ of torque hooked to a progressive sled with the factory hitch. bunch of other parts come flying out but never seen a hitch give out.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Feb-02 AT 11:32 AM (EST)]The 1999 and 2000 hitches were only rated for 10,000lbs. I believe they increased this to 12,500lbs in the 2001 model year.

You guys be REALLY careful with those ratings. I special-ordered a '99 to have a Class IV, which the rest of the towing industry says takes you to 10,000 lbs. The truck arrived with a Ford "V5" rated hitch, but the fine print (both on paperwork and stamped onto the hitch) maxed-out at a Class III, 8000lb rating. That ain't Class IV, and they bought me a new Reese Class V after I griped.
Bought a 2001 brand-new off the lot. Same darned Ford hitch, so I had the old one transfered.
Buy the best you can get, and that'll be aftermarket. Buying Ford's hitch for heavy towing is a waste of money, and may put you in danger as well.
If you need any more capacity than either the 10K or 12.5K (weight distributing) that comes on these trucks, you should be using a gooseneck or 5th wheel.
It tickles me to see the loads some folks are towing!
I didn't even bother with the factory hitch. Here's what I installed on my truck: http://www.torklift.com/loadit.html . The Superhitch is rated 15,000 lbs and is really nice if you are towing while hauling your camper.
