Brake flushing

I have an 01 Ranger with the four wheel abs and I want to flush my brake system. Anything I have to be aware of pertaining to the abs system? Do I use the same flushing proceedure as a non-abs system? These abs systems are expensive to replace and I don't want to cause any problems. Then again I think brake fluid should be replaced every 2 years or so. Any advice appreciated.

I went to my local brake shop and the guy checked his book for all models, and it said no special procedure was needed on my '98. If you use a turkey baster to remove the fluid out of the resvoir, then refill the cylinder and bleed the system keeping the resevoir full, you should be fine. I did it on my '98 when I rebuilt the rear brakes and it worked just fine.

I would reccomend a power bleeder though.

Not necessary, you can always use the pedal, but it sure makes the job a heck of a lot easier.

The only precaution with ABS brakes, is not to push the old brake fluid back into the system. Before pushing the pistons back into the calipers, open the bleeder valve....

If you really are serious about doing it right, get a vacuum pump with the fittings and small cup. After sucking out the fluid with the turkey baster, fill the cyl with fresh fluid and use the pump to suck the new fluid through the system. Works great, and you can do it by yourself. Make sure you refill the master cylinder after each wheel.

There are also bleed valves available that have a check ball incorporated so you can press the brake, and no air will enter when you let it up. Never used them, but they are available.

Thanks for the input. As soon as it warms up I'm gonna do it.
