back in 72 i took a mechanic,s course in the evening.we had access to a boring bar and had a field day.tried a lot of different things.a guy took in a 65 fairlane 289 for a rebuild.turned out he needed a block and we couldn,t find one.we got checking around and found the 260 had a bor of 3.8.we decided to take a chance.we found an old 260 block and went to work.i bored for two evenings.there was a shouvle full of shavings on the floor.we put all the stnd,289 parts into it.the lasti heard of it two years later it was going strong.has anyone else ever done this.
Wow! I've always read that a 260 can't be bored out to a 289. Ford Muscle says the max. overbore is .030". They also say the cores are different, here's their words:
"Blocks, basic design identical for each engine. The 289-302 blocks however are cast with larger bore water jacket cores than the 221-260 blocks to achieve increased bore diameters. Note narrower water jackets surrounding the cylinder. In other words, you can't simply overbore a 221 or 260 to come up with a 289...because the blocks have been cast differently."
I've always wanted to build a 221 as a high revving screamer. I once owned a '63 Buick Skylark with that aluminum 215 V-8, and that sucker would flat out fly. The engine was a piece of junk, but it sure made the ponies - 11-1 compression, 4 bbl, and got 20 MPG..
I know the Ford could do just as well, and would have the reliability of a cast iron block.
The 260 in my Falcon Sprint wants to rev like it's nobody's business! I have to keep my ears open and an eye on the tach above 6K 'cause it takes off so quick.
bb i don,t know if it was beginners luck or what.like you i read so many times you can, t bore this engine over o60.i never heard of only 030.even if it was luck if i could go .200 over anybody should have been safe at .125.
