im thinking of swapping my t-18 4 spd standard for a automatic. the only problem is i dont want to lose any power, ive been in automatics and they lack accerlation. is thier anyway i can get a automatic without losing accerlation? oh yea its a 66 f100 352.
A C6 with a shift kit will give you good firm shifts, but auto's use more power than a standard to run their internals, so not much can be done to reduce that power loss. You might check into the transmission forum for their advise.
What's your budget? The Tremec 5-speed is a popular item behind the FE. Of course, don't for get the cost of the bellhousing/flywheel/clutch and the ever cool hydraulic linkage...
ff, When running a st. dr. you control the shift points. Should you decide you want to stay in second a little longer and you can do it, smack the gas then change it, your control. With the auto, it is set to do those chores for you.
I am a firm believer that any full grown Ford truck should shift it's own gears, and will not have a clutch in any truck of mine very long.
Some folks don't like the C6 shifts. Ford spent a lot of time and money making them smooth as glass but guys put shift kits in to feel them hook up.
I am 55 years old, live in town, and am over that need for control in my life. I really enjoy driving my 66 with auto tranny, power steering, and the greater stopping power of the discs.
So, it's all choice, hope you make the right one for you.
ff;
just my two cents worth;
I know on my 240 I6 there's also the cost of having to purchase a different starter as well. They make one for Auto's and one for manuals. I have a C-6 hook up to my 302cid, I removed a C-4 from the truck during my change / engine swap; I was told a C-4 you gain Horse power over the C-6 but the C-6 is better for endurance and top end speed.
