i have a playstation2, a dvd/mp3 player, and a 120v power converter in my center console, all the wires run out the front of the console under the carpet. some go through the firewall to the battery and some go to my reciever in the dash and the tv screen. i still have room in there to put some stuff ... like DVDs and video games its nice having the power converter, it works good when i forget to charge the cordless drill/ sawzall batteries i can plug em in on the way to a job.
ive been thinking about the cupholder idea for a while and i am either going to make something out of some 3/4" oak that has holes in it for the cups and sits up a couple inches from where the cupholder is now, or i am going to drill out the bottoms and put in new deeper ones and mold it all in with fiberglass or bondo and paint it all.
I siliconed the mounting screws and added a hole in the floor and console with a drain at the bottom, it now is hold a bag of ice and 12 beer perfectly... love the cooler design
1993 eddie bauer -- has two places for cups -- when i first got it they had a bunch of "sticky" stuff in them -- i pilled em out and took em the house too clean -- forgot to take back out for a few days and noticed pop bottles fit better without em --

yeah the 92-96 Bronco's have the removable insert, helps a lillte, anyone have problems with Slurpee's from 711, the BIG ones, They fall over all the time on me, really a mess!
I got tired of the worthless stock console so I made this one. The big cup holder can hold a super big gulp, and the other is standard size but alot more depth. Underneith the cd's is a seperate compartment that houses my amplifier and a cooling fan. Its just high enough to do away with the seat armrests. It took a lot of work but was well worth it to me. You can also see some speaker enclosures i built that takes the place of the map holders in my gallery.
Its not too hard if you have some patience and decent tools. I was lucky enough to have access to a nice table saw. I sat down and drew out a blueprint of all the dimensions so I didn't go into it completely blind. I would say the hardest part was getting the base frame work right due to the contours of the floorboard. I cut cardboard until I got it sized up right. Once the initial base was done it flew right along. It took me about 4 days to do everything, but was running amp wiring and stuff also. It was also tricky to figure out a way to make it very difficult for would be thieves to be able to get to the amp. I ended up hinging the console to be able to tilt back so I can make adjustments to the amp, and too secure it closed I have two carriage bolts that pass through the amp compartment and lock down under the cup holders. You can only get access to those with the lid open and removing the screws to the cup holder. Maybe I over engineered a bit, but most people don't even realize there is an amp there. Hope this helps!
My 96 xl didn't come with a console so, being a woodworker, I built my own.
very simple box with a lid on top that is hinged in the back, has four DEEP cupholders sized for my mondo coffee mug, and the whole thing is attatched to the floor with velcro which is sewn to the carpet and stapled to the bottom of the console. believe it or not it doesnt move.
the thing is rather large and I also suffer from "canyon syndrome" but being made of birch plywood I can add in trays or dividers etc with out a problem.
I mounted a 6 disc pioneer cd changer in my 1994 factory console. it sits all the way to the back and the coin/junk tray still fits right in front of it. I cut a small hole in the bottom of the console for the wiring and ran it under the carpet to the dash. It looks just like a factory install. The hardest part was bolting down the back side of the changer. Had to use a flex extension for my socket and had to tape the screw into it.
Here is a pic of my custom console. Took 1 day, and just a few materials. Hard to see, but there are 4 switches to control front fogs, rear bumper mounted backups, 2 spare. Gauges are Oil pressure, coolant temp and volts. I like the 2 adjustable cup holders myself... The arm rest is 4" thick padding and opens up to storage compartment.
