99 F350 PSD
I ONLY HAVE 44000 ON MY 99 SD PSD AND DO NOT HAUL HEAVY LOADS ON A CONSISTANT BASIS. BUT IT SEEMS THAT MY REAR MAIN SEAL IS STARTING TO LEAK OR AT LEAST I THINK THAT IS WHERE IT IS COMING FROM. I WILL INVESTIGATE TONIGHT IT MAY BE FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE. HAS THIS BEEN A PROBLEM WITH ALL 99 SD TRUCKS. I HAVE A COUPLE OF FRIENDS THAT HAVE THE SAME YEAR AND THE SAME PROBLEM. IVE NEVER HAD THIS OCCUR ON ANY DIESEL UNTIL USUALLY AROUND 150K OR SO. I GUESS THE FORD DEALERSSHIP WILL RAPE ME ON THE COST TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM. HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THE SEAL GO OUT SO PREMATURELY?

Wow, you're REALLY upset with all that yellin' and all (All Caps)!
Make sure that it is the rear main first. They are some leaks that appear to be the rear main but is actually something else.

Are you sure the oil isn't leaking from the top of the engine downwards? Check the engine valley for oil first. I had a leak up there and saw it at the lower back of the engine first and thought the rear main was leaking too. There are many things on top of the engine that can leak and run down the back of the engine. Get a flashlight and check the top of the engine to be sure.

i would bet upon closer inspection there are plugs in the back of the head that the o-rings leak on. rear mains are not a problem but those o-rings are. besides what are you worried about? diesel has 5 year 100,000 warrenty with a $100 deductable. can't be too expensive.

My father's truck and my brother-in-law had the same problem, it turned out to be one of the valve covers needed tightidg, on my brother-in-laws' the valve cover screws were almost out on the bottom side, very unusual, although both of the trucks were over 100,000 mi. the oil leaked down and showd up all around the starter and tranny. both were also 99.5's- i wouldnt' be suprised if it was a similar, minor problem such as this
