Manual t-case not engaging

I have a '87 Ford bronco fullsize with the 351W and a new C-6 tranny. I am having trouble with the Transfer case. I have manual locking t-case and hubs. When I try to engage my t-case to 4-hi, it will not lock into place: I have to hold it in. Also, it will not even go into 4-Low. When I try to put it in 4-low(all in proper operation of being stopped and in neutral), there is a grinding noise. It won't even engage with engine off. What's the deal?

Sounds like linkage alignment....make sure that it is allowing you full movement.

does the truck have a body lift, if so your shift lever may not be moving forward and backwards enough.

Crawl underneath and check the nylon bushings on the T-case linkage. One of them cracked and fell out on my 86 and it stayed in 4 low until I got a new one from Ford.
