Blow By question

I drove a 97 F350 7.3 for about a year and a half and fell in love with the PowerStroke.

I just bought MY 1st diesel today. 99 F250 SD Crew Cab 7.3l. It only has 86K miles and is really clean. Doesn't appear to ever have a 5th wheel attached.

I was told to check the Blow By by taking the cap off the oil intake under the hood while the engine is running warm.

If I notice a considerable amount of smoke is this a major problem?

I'm new here so go easy on me. I've been reading around the different forums and couldn't find anything definitive.

Thanks for any help,

Rob

Some blow by is normal for diesels. 17.5:1 compression ratio creates alot of cylinder pressure.
