I need a tranny code.

Im trying to buy a new tranny for a truck which does not have one. In order for me to order one (at least from the 2 places I called) I have to provide them with a number on some tag that sposidly hangs from the side.

Can anyone look up, or guide me to a place were I can look up a code for a:

5 Spd Manual transmission (towing setup) out of an
88 Ford F250, Standard cab, short bed, 2 wheel drive, 7.5 liter.
Not sure if it makes a difference, but has a dana60 with 4.33 gear.

I think what I am looking for is a ZF tranny. Anyone know the code for a zf tranny?

Also, is that a cable tranny or a hydraulic? becaise I have a slave cylender for a hydro clutch.

A 5 spd in a 250 w/460 will be the ZF, and 88 is the first year they put them in. If it's the 351w in your sig that you are putting it onto it won't work, the 460 has a different bolt pattern.

And a ZF uses a hydraulic internal slave cylinder for the clutch.
The tag should start with E8 if that helps.

I am swapping out the 351w with a 460. This is why i need a code, the 2 companies near me that can get me one quick want me to give them a code. For some reason, they cant look it up themselves.

I just checked my 88 Factory manuals and they don't list a ZF at all, just a M5OD-HD and the regular M5OD. I'll go out to the garage and check the service manual and see if the M5OD-HD is the ZF and edit this post.

Interesting, the service manual does not list a M5OD-HD, just the M5OD and the ZF. It has a picture of the ZF ID tag and it shows a Ford Part Nunber E7TA-7003-HA, but I don't know which motor it is for. It also shows it as a S5-42.

Probably not much help, but I tried

I finally found some history information on the internet. Seems that 87-94 is ZF-s5-42, and 95-97 is ZF-s5-47. I have a 95 460 thats going into an 88 f250. Anyone know which is the right one I need? Or what the difference is between the 2?

The last two numbers are the torque rating x 10.

42 = 420 ft lbs torque rating
47 = 470

And s5 means five speed
Later models have an electric speedometer, early ones are cable.

And you could send this place $1449.99 (shipping and core charge included) and they will ship you the right ZF.

ZF
No experience with them myself, wish I could afford one though.

It sounds like the parts house wants a number so they can meet a core charge responsibility. They could give you one without, but generally don't want to or lack the know how to get one with out the part number. People by-pass this by going to the junk yard and finding a wrecked unit...of course ZF's are a bit pricey to be doing it that way.

You could go to the recycler and find a trashed unit just to get the tag number. To bypass any future problems make sure the truck had a 460.

You can go HERE (car-parts.com) and do State, Regional, and Nationwide searchs to find a used one and get an idea of what they are asking.

I just checked, and they are asking $650 - $1200 for used ZF's for a 460 (2wd).
