Question Head Temperatrue Gauge

Hello, I have '79 400 and I was wondering if anyone has ever put a head temperature gauge on their motor? I just rebuilt her and I found 3 cracks in the valve seats on the heads. I was able to machine the cracks out and install new valve seats but I wanted to make sure it isn't getting too hot up top. The block runs at good temperture, I just want to make sure the heads are cooled properly and the cracks might have just been from the previous owner letting her run a little dry.

Thank You

I would suspect nucleate boiling (localized boiling, pockets of steam, in the head that don't appear on the temp guage) occured previously, or like you say, it was plain overheated. Run a sealed cooling system with a T-stat (not just for regulating temp but also provides back pressure in the block/heads which raises the BP even higher.) and 50/50 anti-freeze and don't worry about it. There are some nifty CHT guages out there mainly for air-cooled engines that have a thermocouple that fits around the base of a flat spark plug. This is critical info when your in a single cylinder ulralight but 8 guages in a P/U might be a bit much. Welcome to FTE. GL
