What are the advantages/disadvantages of a stacked plate trans cooler vs. a tube and fin trans cooler. I had a 93 Bronco and a 97 Expedition both with the e4od tranny. I was disappointed when I found out my 01 F150 with the 5.4 was equipped with the smaller 4r70w. Oh well, I just have to take a few extra preventative measures to ensure its longevity. Are there shift kits for this transmission or should I go with a chip? Any other advice is appreciated. I don’t tow anything real heavy, just the toys. Also is there drain plug on the converter of the 4r70w?
The stacked plate design is supposed to be more efficient. IE pull out more heat.
The 4R70W is a good tranny. Just keep the fluid changed every 30,000 miles or so and it should last a long time. Yes the converter has a drain plug.
A tuner type chip will firm up the shifts by speeding up the solenoids. This is easier and will work fine.

http://www.kdsperformance.com/info.html has TransGo shift kits. You have to remove the valve body but it is simple enough, cheap enough, and has full instructions and video. It also works with a Diablo chip according to them but makes even firmer shifts.
