Ok, I bumped up a little in tire height to 255/85/16, and a much more aggressive tread. I really don't want to destroy the front of my TT (which is diamond plate, but awful thin). I've seen several SD's with the large semi-style mudflaps, and got to look at 2 up close today (one at a gas station, on in a mall parking lot). Due to the incredible lack of "skeleton" (for lack of a better word), both the ones I looked at had semi-sized flaps, bolted into the wheelwell, (through the bed!!!)and jury rigged a bracket coming a ways from the frame, and finally attached to the micron-thick sheet metal of the fender.
So, I hit the Ford Dealer on the way home, and he's got a form fitted smaller rubber mudflap with a bracket....actually pretty slick, it actually fits the way it's supposed to. I haven't mounted them yet, just held up to fit.
not to impressed on how the front mud flaps go on but, they work and look very well. have never seen any with problems of comeing off so guess they are on well enough. have seen some with the shorter 2wd flap on the 4x4's. looks better but does not work as well. if you do it you might go ahead and do front and back to match. think it looks a little better to me.
I bought the Ford molded mudflaps about three months ago.
I really like them, they look real good,
and of all things they WORK... I have oversized tires,
and 1/4 mile of mud road to drive everyday.
I made a very slight mod on the front kit. The
installation was breeze very nice kit!!!
Here's a heads-up on the Ford Splash guards for the rear......they wear the paint off of the fender! Apparently there is just enough flex in them and they vibrate a bit while cruising down the road. Of course tiny bits of dirt and gravel get in between the fender and flap and accelerate the wear process.
I have just over 8000 miles on my 2000 Super Duty. When I took one of the guards loose (for some reason) a few months ago I almost fainted. The paint on the outside of the fender under the guard looked terrible.
If you haven't installed the guards yet, or if have and your paint is still salvageable, go to your local auto parts store and pick up some of the 3M clear plastic film that is made for preventing rock chips in your paint. (You see a lot of this stuff along the bottom edges of cars and trucks now days.) Cut a piece just large enough to cover the area behind the guard. I've heard of others placing a bead of clear silicone on the paint just prior to mounting the guard.
Yikes......I just went down to NAPA to pick up some of the 3M clear rock chip film while this issue was still fresh on my mind. The smallest roll of 1 inch wide film is 40 bucks. I wonder if a body shop may carry this stuff? It looks a like 1" x 12" piece would be plenty to do both sides.
Has anyone bought a roll and may be willing to sell me a foot of it?
>Hey REYNWRAP Just curious what was the mod you made to the

On the front flaps I cut the rubber stand off in half to pull the flap back tighter. I also used different hardware at the inner mount
with the stand off. Larger screw, fender washer and a lock nut. I still used the plastic push in fasterners.
After reading the Neils post about scuffing the paint off under
the flap I went out and checked mine, OK so far.. I think I try to
find some of that tape. Thanks Will
Decided to look at mine (Ford type). Took all four off, they had been on for about a month and a half. Already starting to wear into the paint. So did a real cheap fix with electrical tape. It stretches enough to fit around the radius without wrinkling. Since the paint was already scuffed a bit, I had a pattern to follow. Doubled it up for good protection. Seems to have done the trick. Of course it helps that the bottom part of my truck is black. Suggest if you have these type of mud flaps, check and fix it quick or you won't have any paint left under them. Looks like another well thought out FoMoCo product.
SMOTU, how bad was the front worn compared to the rear? I'm afraid to take my front guards off after seeing what the rears looked like!
My 96 4x4 Ranger had some of that clear rock chip stuff on the front corners of the bed. I'm going to swing by the dealer tomorrow and see if they can order those pieces for me. I think there might be enough in those two pieces to cover the areas that are wearing.

Front weren't bad at all, just a small line at the outer top which could probably be polished out. The back were already through the clearcoat. Let us know if the Ranger trick works.
I got my OEM flaps today and bought a roll of 3M plastic tape, 1 1/2" x 3 yard, black for $2.50 at a GI Joes auto place. They also had clear and some other colors. If you do this make sure you clean the surface and then apply alcohol to get any residue and wax off. I think it will really help keep the paint wear down. Probably not a permanent fix but better than not at all.
No luck at the body shop either. But.....the nice lady there knew what I was looking for and told me where I could find it. She sent me over to the local motorcycle shop. JACKPOT!!!!!!! Even the genuine 3M stuff. $14.99 for three big sheets. When I'm done, I'm going to have about 2-3/4 sheets left over.
I removed all of the splash guards Saturday. (My truck is blue and gold ans has just over 8000 miles) On the rear, there was a spot on both sides about the size of a dime where the gold paint was completely gone, and it was wearing into the blue. There was a tiny spot of clear coat near the top of the guard was scuffed up a bit, bit it pretty much disappeared with some scratch and swirl remover. On the front, the clear coat was scuffed pretty bad. I wasn't able to get the shine back.
I cut pieces of the 3M clear vinyl in the shape of the splash guard and made them so they were about 1/4 inch larger than the area covered by the guard. The vinyl is not something that most folks will even notice. Hopefully the problem is cured.
