What is the cheapest, but most effective mod to increase gas mileage? I have a bone stock 460(from intake to exhaust-everything stock). There are many mods I want to do, but what are the lowest priced ones for right now?
Right now she is running good. Usually first turn of the key. She is stubborn when it is cold though, but not too bad. right now it is 5-6 mpg.
Any help would be great.
First things first, open up the exhaust. No matter what you do, if she can't exhale, she can't breath at all. So, I would look into that, maybe dual 2.5" or 3" exhaust with headers. I wouldn't go smaller than 2.5" nor bigger than 3" with dual exhaust.
The next step would be to make sure that you have a "straight up" timing chain set. Starting with the emissions of '72 or so, Ford retarded the timing to meet EPA regulations on carb'd motors. This went away with EFI.
Once those are done, then you can start to look into other items. Maybe a better ignition box, upgraded spark plug wires, etc.
Also, make sure that the carb is in good shape. From what you say, it sounds to me that the choke isn't quite right or the mixture is off just a little.
What axle ratio are you running? What size tires are on the truck? How fast do you drive?
If you are looking to save money on fuel you are limited to the value of the saved fuel. That is, many of the modifications that really save gas will never get to pay for themselves.

1994 Bronco 460 MAF EFI
4.10 gears 33" big tires, no overdrive and 8-9 MPG
I have 373 gears and 35" tires. I am also looking to enhance the performance of the engine as well. I know I will be spending money in the future; just not right now. I just drive to go. I don't really hot rod it. What are the pros and cons of efi and carb. Which has more potential for horsepower while preserving mpg? I know a 460 won't be the greatest with gas mileage.
Hey offroadfords, thanks for voting for my truck. The guy I bought it from helped me paint it. Original factory color dark green yellow metalic, it took 13 colors to make it.
