brake replacement rear E-350 ??

How hard is it to remove the rear brake drums from my E-350 box van? I need to check the brake shoes and wheel cyl. . I have a repair manual and it states I have to remove the axle to remove the brake drum. How much trouble is it to remove and replace the axle correctly? Do you have to have special tools for this ?
thanks;
JE

I think this article will give you an idea:

Note that you'll need that special tool for your axle. Do you know the axle code? It should be on your drivers door sticker.

if you have the same diff as the one in the link above all you need is a hammer to get the brake drum off. pull on one side and tap the opposite side it should break free. the axle just unbolts and slides out the special tool is to remove the bearing retainer nut. you don't need to remove the nut unless you're changing wheel seals and bearings. it takes a certain amount of skill to replace rear brake parts make sure you know what your getting into. get a good set of brake spring pliers and an adjusting spoon before you dive in.

Agreed with 77redf250. You will need to take the axle out if you have to rebuild any of the brake components though (they are almost impossible to get apart with the hub in place. While (if) you're in there, best to replace those seals as per the article...cheap insurance.
